NYUAD’s Arts Centre to host exciting line-up of events in October
The Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) will host an exciting lineup of music events, films, theatre, dance performances, and workshops for the month of October.
On 1st and 2nd October, award-winning director Joanna Settle and NYUAD Alumni Reem Almenhali will collaborate in “Al Raheel | Departure by Reem Almenhali and Joanna Settle” to present a revival of the 2020 theatre production that explores the depth and diversity of life as an Emirati woman. Weaving rich Arabic and English language poetry with a backdrop of images and movement, the production explores womanhood and the future. It reflects on a body that stays while a world changes.
On 3rd October, the Centre will host a live conversation with Jordanian filmmaker Zaid Abu Hamdan, which will follow a screening of his film, Daughters of Abdul-Rahman. The film follows four estranged and offbeat sisters who are forced to come together to find their suddenly-missing father.
An in-depth music masterclass titled “Cosmic Music: A Contemporary Exploration of the Music of John and Alice Coltrane – Ravi Coltrane” will take place on 5th October, with Ravi Coltrane, Grammy-nominated saxophonist and bandleader will lead an interactive, teaching the skills and techniques of his craft.
Set to be held on 6th October, “Cosmic Music: A Contemporary Exploration into the Music of John and Alice Coltrane” will feature acclaimed saxophonist Ravi Coltrane as he reimagines the spiritual and ecstatic music of two jazz pioneers.
Scheduled for 10th October, an interactive workshop, titled “Including Poetry in theatre – Approaches to Writing Scenes” and delivered in Arabic and English, will see Reem Almenhali, performance artist and playwright, sharing her approaches to writing poetry into theatre scenes. Participants will be taken through writing exercises, to start a journey of their own.
Award winning theatre and opera director Joanna Settle will share her specific approaches to directing for theatre, opera and performance art, based on some of her experiences, on 11th October in a workshop titled “An Exploration of a Director’s Approach”. Settle will share case studies and discuss processes for developing and presenting live performance, including some of the challenges a director faces.
On 24th October, “Urban and Contemporary Dance Workshop: What The Day Owes To The Night (Ce Que Le Jour Doit A La Nuit) by Cie Hervé Koubi” will feature Guillaume Gabriel, co-founder of Compagnie Hervé Koubi, as he leads participants through some of the fundamental principles of urban and contemporary dance, while on 26th October, the Centre will host “Contemporary and Urban Dance: What The Day Owes To The Night”, an extraordinary whirlwind of movement blending contemporary and urban dance with martial arts.
