Vasujit Kalia in a tête-à-tête with the charming and versatile cosmetic dentist Dr. Kapil Khurana from Moscow who will be soon starting a monthly column for the readers of The Dubai Today. Here he talks about his journey from India to Moscow and the hurdles he faced and the throws light on how the health care sector has evolved over these decades.
Since your inception in Russia you have traversed a long way can you throw some light on this journey, how difficult the journey was and what challenges you faced?
Ans. I moved to Russia in 1991 from capital of India, New Delhi with an aim to do dentistry, though we have good colleges in India too but I had my eyes set to move out of India and continue my higher education from a foreign country where there is more technological advancements.
Having initially learnt Russian, I was on road to adapt myself to my new country land.
I did my graduation in dentistry and then decided to settle in Russia and started my private practice as a general dental doctor but the desire to learn more gain more expertise had not quenched . Then I did my post graduation in paedo dentistry, in which in specializes in treatment the dental problems of kids basically, my skill improved as months passed by finding recreation and bringing big smile to people face was a satisfying job like none other.
This thing motivated me to deviate towards cosmetic dentistry and my results to my surprise where amazing.
I went further ahead and trained myself in cosmetic dentistry and hold certifications from ESCD European society of cosmetic dentistry and I’m also a member of AACD American academy of cosmetic dentistry
Soon I started getting patients with more complex dental problems but I always followed policy of open discussion with my patients before I would take a reconstruction task and by God’s grace the pre procedure counseling and the results thereafter were amazing and won lots of appreciation. Though it wasn’t as easy as it may sound on paper, I had my tough times all through this journey with every new patient putting my abilities to test.
After you ventured into the field of healthcare in Russia how has the health care sector evolved over the decades across the Russia?
Ans. Healthcare in Russia has evolved dramatically at varying degrees in various parts of the country itself , the way a patient is approached and the way the problem at hand is analyzed, also the tools available to resolve the problems as the technology advances have undergone a paradigm shift .
Now when I look back at over more than two decades of my journey in Russia and dentistry; starting from an era where traveling was not so common and No means of communication other than landline phones to the current world where communication audio and video are available at our fingertips. I consider myself lucky to be part of these evolutionary times.
What according to you are new innovations in the dentistry world?
Ans. There was time when dentistry had procedures like tooth extraction, Root canal treatment, capping made of various prosthetic material and cosmetic resetting of misaligned teeth in kids and young children. In the current times we have advanced procedures such as implants and different procedures to give a person a perfect smile.

Just to get a deeper knowledge about how the people are affected in the current stressful era during and after this pandemic. I did two courses from The University of Oxford, course in Psychology and course in CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). I decided to continue my education as a professional psychologist also, Oxford and Moscow state university.
In these tough times of pandemic my knowledge and approach to my patients as a psychologist also will further help me feel my patients, bring a brighter smile on the faces, happiness and bliss in the minds of my fellow countrymen and globally.
